Permits

Propane Permits

  • A permit from the Berkley Fire Department shall be required for any new aboveground or underground propane storage tank installation. Any change in vendors or location of tanks will require a permit application from the Fire Department.
  • All propane tank installations shall comply with the Massachusetts Fire Prevention Regulation 527 CMR 1, Chapter 69 and NFPA 58. Any AST or UST propane tank with a storage capacity of 500 gallons or greater shall require Fire Department approval on tank placement prior to installation. No permit shall be issued without said approval.
  • Any newly installed AST or UST propane tank with a capacity of 500 gallons or greater, shall be inspected prior to receiving a delivery of propane.
  • The Berkley Fire Department shall be notified upon completion of any propane tank installation (including smaller tanks) so that a final inspection can be conducted.

Oil Burners

All oil burner/boiler work shall comply with Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Code 527 CMR 1 Chapter 11 and be documented on Department of Fire Services Form FP-056 form 1

Inspection Requirements

The Berkley Fire Department requires inspections on all work that is conducted upon oil burner/boilers and their appurtenances and the removal/installation of any above ground/underground oil storage tanks.

For Oil Burner/Boiler Installations

The FP-056 permit shall be submitted to Fire Headquarters with a check for $50.00 before any work is started. Upon nearing completion of the installation or modification, notify the Fire Department at and request a final inspection.  Completing this inspection at this time eliminates a return visit to the site for a final inspection.  The Fire Department must complete this inspection before issuing the permit for fuel storage.

Oil Tank Removal

The FP-056 permit shall be submitted to Fire Headquarters with a check for $50.00 before any work is started. Upon nearing completion of the installation/removal or modification, notify the Fire Department at (508) 822-7516 and request a final inspection.  Oil tank installation and removal can be documented by a licensed oil burner technician on the DFS Form FP-056.
