Berkley Fire and Rescue Department Responds to 2 Crashes in 1 Hour on Route 24

Chief Jason Perry reports that Berkley Fire and Rescue crews responded to a pair of motor vehicle crashes Tuesday afternoon on Route 24. One incident was fatal.

Crews were called to the scene of the first event at 12:52 p.m., with the report of a vehicle on fire on Route 24 southbound near mile marker 13.8. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that an SUV had crashed into a work truck that was parked in the breakdown lane.

The driver was the only occupant of the SUV, and they were pronounced dead in the scene. A person who stopped to offer help prior to firefighters’ arrival was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

That crash remains under investigation by multiple teams of the Massachusetts State Police, including the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Not long afterward, Berkley Fire and Rescue received word of another crash on Route 24 southbound, near mile marker 16. Upon arrival, crews discovered that three vehicles were involved. One rolled over onto its roof.

Two patients were transported by ambulance to local trauma centers. Information on their conditions is unavailable.

Mutual aid at both scenes was provided by the Freetown Fire Department, and Raynham firefighters provided mutual aid at the second scene.

“For a department of our size to respond to two incidents so close to each other, that proved a challenge,” Chief Perry said. “We are tremendously grateful to our neighbors in Freetown and Raynham for providing assistance when we needed it.”
